The Sorrows of Young Werther

The Sorrows of Young Werther

This is Goethe’s first novel, presented in diary form. It tells the story of a young man named Werther, deeply in love with Charlotte, his friend’s wife. The novel, ‘The Sorrows of Young Werther,’ had a significant impact on the ‘Sturm und Drang’ movement and later Romanticism. It’s partly autobiographical, reflecting Goethe’s own experiences in 1772 when he fell in love with Charlotte Buff, who was engaged to his friend Johann Christian Kestner.
