Ragged Dick

Ragged Dick, a bootblack of fourteen years, indulges in smoking and occasional drinking, and his nightly shelter is the streets. However, he harbors a strong desire to transform his life and become more respectable. He firmly refuses to engage in theft under any circumstances, which earns him admiration from several gentlemen who are impressed by his determination to better himself. One such gentleman, Mr. Greyson, extends an invitation for him to attend church, while Mr. Whitney generously offers him five dollars for performing a service.
